Speech-language therapist works on the letter A with a child during speech therapy,

Speech language pathology (SLP)

A child may need extra support to begin talking or speaking clearly. We help them find their voice.

Children discover how to communicate their needs and wants from infancy by using nonverbal and verbal cues. Over time signals evolve into language.

Our speech therapy program helps children who struggle to develop speech and language.

Making the most of your time

Our speech therapists work with parents, caregivers and other health providers to deliver the best care. How long a child remains in speech therapy depends on the severity of the challenges, the frequency they receive treatment and the consistency of home support.

Most SLP client's programs include two 30-minute sessions per week.

During that time, we may focus on:

  • Increasing receptive language to understand thoughts, ideas and feelings.

  • Increasing the ability to express thoughts, ideas and feelings.

  • Promoting pragmatic language, such as what to say, how to say it and when to say it.

  • Increasing a child's pronunciation and articulation.

We work one-on-one and provide opportunities to increase social, speech, and language skills. Socal scenarios are constructive for testing skill retention and application.

Over time, we expect to speech therapy to support improvements in:

  • Functional communication skills.

  • Language fluency and fluidity.

  • Communication skills to increase the quality of socialization with peers.

Ensuring their greatest potential

Some children enrolled in SLP therapy require support beyond developing speech and language. Often pairing speech therapy with occupational therapy (OT) or applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy supports their overall development.

For these children, receiving all therapies in one location optimizes their time in treatment, increases the amount of at-home family time, and can often provide a better experience for the child.
