Early intervention

Addressing developmental delays and disabilities in young children.

We want to ensure your child has all the tools before they enter elementary school. By providing individualized plans and academic goals, we help children aged 2 through 3 who are at risk for having developmental delays and disabilities.

Early intervention allows parents and caregivers to halt the continued development of a social or psychological problem. These programs:

  • Operate at a slower pace.

  • Reduce distractions.

  • Increase focus.

  • Prepare children to enter pre-school, VPK or grade school.

  • Provide academic support.

We address many skills in early intervention programs, such as:

  • Self-help skills such as washing hands, feeding and potty training.

  • Maladaptive behaviors when transitioning to and from activities.

  • Peer interaction.

  • Play skills (turn-taking, waiting, appropriate play).

Florida's early intervention program is called Early Steps. It operates as part of the state's continued development plan under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Early intervention has no cost to parents and caregivers, although insurance approval can help ensure a smooth transition to continued therapy once the child becomes ineligible for early intervention.

Identify and treat behavioral challenges early

We provide early intervention services to children between the ages of 2 and 3. The state coordinates services for those who are at risk for having developmental delays and disabilities at this age.
